PM confirms communication with Ukrainian President on reset of relations, says the rest depends on practical steps
“We have had one communication with the Ukrainian President over general issues, including the significance of the reset of relations. All the rest depends on practical steps,” Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told reporters.
The PM recalled some steps which deteriorated relations between the Georgian and Ukrainian governments.
“As you know, there were some steps which deteriorated relations between the governments. This will not reflect relations between the two countries or the people-to-people relationship grounded in solid historical roots.
But certain steps deteriorated relations between the governments: This was the recall of the ambassador, and our ambassador’s expulsion. Another issue was the imposition of sanctions. The Ambassador was recalled from our country because we did not impose sanctions and refused to send volunteer fighters at the official consent of the government. Later, you remember calls from the Ukrainian government’s high-ranking officials on the opening of the second front. These were disadvantegeous steps, which deteriorated relations between the governments. If there is interest, we are ready to reset relations between our governments,” he said.
Foreign Minister of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha commended Georgian and Swiss colleagues Maka Botchorishvili and Ignazio Cassis for their leadership and expressed gratitude to other countries for their adherence to the UN Charter and the Helsinki Principles.
Also, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Georgia on Independence Day.
“I congratulate Georgia and the Georgian people on their Independence Day. Our two nations share long-standing ties and a common understanding of the value of freedom and dignity. I wish Georgia peace, unity, strength, and prosperity. We count on a mutually beneficial relationship and Ukraine stands ready to move toward this,” Zelenskyy wrote on the X Platform.
