Petras Auštrevičius: We have doubts as to whether there was a legal basis for the arrest of well-known opposition figure

I think, there will be questions from the European Union regarding the recent developments in Georgia, – Member of the European Parliament Petras Auštrevičius said in Strasbourg, where Irakli Kobakhidze, Executive Secretary of Georgian Dream and Kakha Kaladze, General-Secretary of the ruling party are on their working visit.

According to the MEP, questions will refer to the fulfilment of obligations under the EU-Georgia Association Agreement and other issues, including the case of Gigi Ugulava.

According to him, the EU expects Georgia to be guided by the rule of law, a court that will not be politically motivated.

“There are cases that raise doubts about objectivity, so you should not expect easy questions from the EU, as we want a real partnership, within which we can discuss everything and exchange arguments” – Petras Auštrevičius stated.

Irakli Kobakhidze and Kakha Kaladze have left for Strasbourg with a working visit early this morning. Leaders of the ruling Georgian Dream party will hold meetings in the European Parliament and with representatives of the European People’s Party (EPP) on February 12-13.
