People’s Power Guram Macharashvili: Georgia will partner with all who respect its sovereignty

“Georgia will build partnership relations with anyone who respects its national sovereignty,” stated MP Guram Macharashvili, Executive Secretary of People’s Power.

According to Macharashvili, high-level participation by Georgian officials in international platforms and ongoing meetings with world leaders demonstrates growing global interest in the country.

“Georgian society has matured and can clearly distinguish disinformation from the truth,” Macharashvili noted. “It is a fact that global approaches are shifting, whether regarding non-recognition policies or other matters. For instance, Marco Rubio does not recognise Kaja Kallas — one is an EU Commissioner managing foreign policy, while the other is the US Secretary of State; Donald Trump rejects EU policy; and the US Vice President, addressing a conference in Europe, bluntly told Europeans that their problem is not Russia or China, but the Euro-bureaucracy. Yet none of this prevents them from maintaining trade relations, economic ties, or political cooperation.

Against this backdrop, it is hardly surprising that the Euro-bureaucracy applies pressure on Georgia for refusing to submit to or accept its directives. We did not surrender our national sovereignty to them,” Macharashvili continued.

“They now speak openly about this, whereas four years ago they remained silent, and make no secret of the fact that a country joining the EU will not be a fully empowered member and will lack veto power. In fact, they are even intimidating those who currently hold veto rights, with Hungary serving as a textbook example,” he added.

Macharashvili underscored the importance of Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s visit to the United States, where he is scheduled to address the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly on 24 September.

“Members of the Georgian delegation held numerous direct bilateral meetings with various foreign leaders today, and these discussions will continue in the coming days. Four years ago, when we broke away from Georgian Dream to form People’s Power, we predicted that international interest in Georgia would rise. Our goal is not merely to address international platforms or participate in global forums, but to ensure that partner nations in Europe and Asia develop a genuine desire to deepen ties with Georgia. That time has now arrived,” Macharashvili added.

He also pointed to Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili’s concurrent official visit to Brussels: “Parallel to the Prime Minister’s UN visit, the Speaker of Parliament is in Brussels on an official visit. I am confident his visit will be successful. Shalva Papuashvili will deliver his message, once again proving what the true will of the Georgian public is.”

Macharashvili warned, however, that external pressure against Georgian sovereignty would persist through ideological and financial channels.

“The struggle against Georgia’s sovereignty will continue using various methods—including funding, ideological influence, and beyond. While the scale of radical actions is currently muted compared to before, there is no guarantee it will not escalate. This is further evidenced by an EU-funded event featuring a performer who insulted millions of people. Where are European values in this? The public sees this clearly, which is why trust in the Euro-bureaucracy has eroded,” Macharashvili concluded.
