People’s Power Guram Macharashvili: EU today focuses not on peace or growth, but on stripping away nation-state rights

“The European Union was founded on core principles intended to guarantee higher levels of sovereignty for free nations and make accession attractive. Yet, today we see a bloc focused not on fostering peace, economic growth, or expanding rights, but rather on encroaching upon national sovereignty,” Guram Macharashvili, MP for the People’s Power party, told GPB First Channel.

Macharashvili insisted that the prospect of a ‘Euro-Soviet Union’ holds zero appeal for free nations.

“When representatives of this Euro-bureaucracy lecture Georgia on repression and threaten us with sanctions, let us ask ourselves: which regimes historically spoke in such a tone? Precisely Soviet-style totalitarian states adopted this rhetoric. These are the very same people who criticised our strategic partnership agreement with Beijing, claiming China is a dictatorial regime. Yet they themselves travel to China and sign trade deals, while simultaneously turning to authoritarian tactics, sanctions threats, and geopolitical bullying against us,” Macharashvili said.

The remarks follow reports that Brussels is weighing proposals to end unanimity requirements and circumvent national vetoes.
