Parliament to discuss changes to Georgian citizenship procedure

During the spring session, the Parliament will discuss the Ministry of Justice-prepared proposed legislative amendments pertaining to Georgian citizenship.

Under the new bill, initiated last week, stateless individuals, unlike other foreigners, will be eligible to acquire Georgian citizenship through a routine process upon five-year residence in Georgia.

The project stipulates that, to obtain citizenship through the standard procedure, such individuals must fulfil additional requirements outlined in the same organic law. These requirements include knowledge of the state language, Georgian history and basic principles of law, as well as engaging in employment, owning real estate, holding shares in an enterprise, or undertaking entrepreneurial activities within the territory of Georgia.

Moreover, the draft law proposes to shorten the period for submitting a subsequent appeal to the relevant authorities in the event of rejection of an application for naturalization. Currently set at one year, the proposed amendment reduces the holding period to six months.
