Parliament Speaker warns no complaints accepted from Europeans until they clearly condemn attempted coup; promises no respite on this issue
Europeans have yet to condemn the violent storming of the Presidential Palace on October 4, the Speaker of Georgia’s Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, told journalists.
Papuashvili stated that until the government hears a clear condemnation from every European of the attempted coup and a distinction drawn from the pre-announced state overthrow of October 4, they will accept not a single complaint from them.
“Why do they not condemn the violent assault on the Presidential Palace? In other circumstances, if a bird were to fly badly over Georgia, they’d have commentary on everything. Why do they not condemn it? Why does the EU Ambassador not condemn it? When you meet the EU Ambassador, ask him: last year, before the elections, when he condemned our party’s campaign banners, who had asked the EU Ambassador to do so? Why do they not condemn this year’s violent assault on the Presidential Palace by groups that enjoy their support, the very palace where they present their credentials and which serves as their host in this country: the NGOs and opposition whose gathering received support from the European Commission spokesperson? Now that everyone has gone to ground and we hear not a peep from them, why do they not condemn all of this?
Have they assessed the storming of the Presidential Palace as a democratic step? Until we hear from every European a clear condemnation of the attempted coup, until we hear from every individual with an EU passport in their pocket a condemnation and disassociation from the pre-announced state overthrow of October 4, we shall accept not a single complaint from them. We shall drown out any of their complaints with their deafening silence regarding the state overthrow of October 4,” declared Shalva Papuashvili.
In the Parliament Speaker’s assessment, the silence from abroad reveals that condemnation would expose their own complicity.
“Exposure of the fact that they supported the perpetrators of violence, that they supported the pre-announced scenario for overthrowing the government. Look once again in the archives, I give everyone fair warning that I shall allow no one respite on this issue; look at the statements posted on X, on Twitter, on the evening of October 4: Rasa Juknevičienė, the President of Moldova, Žygimantas Pavilonis, MEPs, their name is legion, who were making statements that ‘we support the Georgian people’ and so forth in parallel with the coup, with the ongoing state overthrow. They were calling out to the Georgian people, and as soon as this coup failed and crumbled, everyone fell silent; they didn’t utter a word or a sound about anything.
So, no one can escape responsibility. All those tweeting on October 4 from abroad who were supporting the storming of the Georgian President’s residence, everyone, naturally, shares political responsibility for the violence that occurred in Georgia.
To this day, these vociferous ambassadors have not enquired after those two police officers who were seriously injured and the 23 police officers wounded as a result of this assault. To this day, they have not enquired how they are. They should be praying that the police officers emerged from all this healthy and well, because it was precisely their encouraged groups who were standing there, assaulting the Presidential Palace,” declared Shalva Papuashvili.
