Archil Talakvadze, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, requested the Venice Commission to evaluate the draft legislative amendments to the Election Code. The bill envisages suspension of state funding and the revocation of election registration for political parties.

“Chairman of Georgia Parliament requested two opinions of Venice Commission on draft amendments to Election Code, the Organic Law on the Political Association of Citizens and the Rules of Procedure of Parliament; draft Art. 791 of Electoral Code (revocation of party registration)”, the Venice Commission tweeted.

Last December, the parliamentary majority leader Irakli Kobakhidze proposed to discuss the bill at the second reading after the OSCE/ODIHR or the Venice Commission issue their conclusions.

Amendments envisage termination of state funding for those political parties that do not fully use their parliamentary mandates. The draft also stipulates for revocation of party registration if a person, who does not meet any of the constitutional requirements for active suffrage, participated in the canvassing.
