Parliament Speaker confident court rules objectively in Saakashvili's case

“Georgia is a lawful state, and its court has consistently demonstrated that it is independent and professional in this regard,” Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili remarked on an upcoming judgement in former President Mikheil Saakashvili’s case.

Today, the court may pass judgement on whether to release Mikheil Saakashvili from prison or postpone his term.

“The judicial procedure implies that the judge makes a judgement, while politicians and attorneys do not,” the Speaker said.

“The court has heard all the evidence and the expert witness and will make its ruling based on that. Georgia is a lawful state. And its court has consistently demonstrated independence and professionalism. Accordingly, I am confident that the court will make an objective verdict,” Papushvili stated.

Georgia’s former President, Mikheil Saakashvili, has been in jail for over a year, convicted of abuse of power while in office. Given his rapidly deteriorating health, the Tbilisi City Court is considering whether his sentence should be suspended or deferred.
