The plenary meeting of the Georgian parliament continues under commotion. The controversy arose in connection with the legislative amendments prepared by the For Georgia party, which envisage the establishment of a minimum wage and setting it at 1,050 GEL.

MP Giorgi Sharashidze presented the proposed amendments to the lawmakers and noted that people in Georgia have “slavery wages.”

“We are pleased with economic growth, but why do we care about economic growth if it does not impact Georgian people’s welfare? Is it for the purpose that one and the same families get rich and expand their businesses? When you defend businesspersons, we suspect that you safeguard their profit.

When every other millionaire is in your ranks, it’s hard for them to understand how low the wages of ordinary people can be. Your lunch costs 500 GEL, while this is the monthly wage for many. You sacrifice people simply for slavery exploitation,” he said.

This statement was objected to by Irakli Zarkua, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Diaspora Affairs. The two MPs exchanged verbal offence.

Giorgi Sharashidze was confronted by other members of the majority, claiming that he was engaged in populism.
