Parliament approves bill on State Inspector’s Service with third reading

Georgian Parliament approved the State Inspector’s Service bill with the third reading on Thursday. Eighty-one MPs voted pro and seven con.

The legislative initiative of MPs Rati Ionatamishvili, Givi Mikanadze, Giorgi Amilakhvari, Anri Okhanashvili, Davit Matikashvili, Aluda Ghudushauri and Guram Macharashvili envisages the establishment of two services – Special Investigation Service and Personal Data Protection Service – instead of one State Inspector’s Service.

These two services will start functioning from March 2022. The ruling Georgian Dream said that no person would lose their job, and all the 120 employees would be distributed to the two newly-established agencies.

“We have heard many speculations and myths about the issue. However, we challenged concrete arguments, time-tested European best practices, and the values of the Strasbourg Court,” MP Rati Ionatamishvili said.

Opposition politicians, non-governmental organizations, the US Ambassador and the Georgian President objected to speedy amendments.
