Two committees back proposed amendments to law on State Inspector’s Service

Parliamentary Procedural Issues and Human Rights Committees backed the proposed changes in the law on State Inspector’s Service during a joint sitting on Tuesday.

The legislative initiative of MPs Rati Ionatamishvili, Givi Mikanadze, Giorgi Amilakhvari, Anri Okhanashvili, Davit Matikashvili, Aluda Ghudushauri and Guram Macharashvili envisages the establishment of two services – Special Investigation Service and Personal Data Protection Service – instead of one State Inspector’s Service.

MP Rati Ionatamishvili denied the allegations that the government would not “stand next to the employees.” Ionatamishvili said the two new services would allow them to work with “amplified legitimacy.” He claimed that proposed amendments are in line with the best European practice.

Representatives of public organizations and State Inspector Londa Toloraia attended the sitting.

Opposition politicians, non-governmental organizations, the US Ambassador and Georgian President object to the parliament’s making the change speedily.
