Opposition MPs reject UNM's call for protest on 9 April

The opposition MPs on Thursday stressed they would not back the United National Movement leader Levan Khabeishvili’s call for protest on 9 April at 5 pm (The 9 April tragedy refers to the events when Soviet troops attacked peaceful protesters in central Tbilisi, killing at least twenty people).

At today’s press point, the UNM leader stressed the need for the action so that the government will fulfil the European Commission’s 12 recommendations for Georgia, which could pave the nation’s path to EU candidate status if met.

Citizens party leader Aleko Elisashvili says, “I am not going to attend Vano Merabishvili-announced rally.”

Girchi member Iago Khvichia believes “this particular day belongs to other people, not the UNM and Khabeishvili.”

People’s Power member Dimitri Khundadze claims, “April 9 is not the UNM’s date, but it belongs to the Georgian society.”

Former Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili earlier said the UNM has been on a recovery path, hoping “in a few months you will witness real protests in the streets.”
