Opposition MPs condemn gov't response to Tbilisi protests

The opposition MPs have voiced their assessments of the May 1 protests in Tbilisi.

Teona Akubardia, an opposition MP, stressed that the Georgian Dream party does not listen to the people’s will, and it goes against the declared constitutional choice. The lawmaker emphasized the need for the protest to remain peaceful.

“This is a civil protest, not a political one. We have seen excessive force used against citizens and politicians. Gomelauri [Interior Minister] must explain who is responsible for political retribution against opposition politicians on the streets,” said Akubardia.

Akubardia argued that the violence against the people was a provocation by the Georgian Dream against their own country.

“The key is to oppose the law peacefully and remove the Georgian Dream from power. The phrase ‘No to Russian law’ has evolved to ‘No to the Russian government.’ The opposition is not responsible for organizing these rallies,” she said.

Tina Bokuchava, a member of the United National Movement, stated that the opposition is using all possible methods to stop the considerations of the “Russian law” in Parliament.

“We must hold those responsible for abusing Georgian youth accountable. Levan Khabeishvili’s injuries make it clear who is responsible for the violence against the opposition and the Georgian youth fighting for the country’s future,” Bokuchava said.

Paata Manjgaladze, a member of Strategy Agmashenebeli, urged the government to reconsider its stance.

“The young people at the rally are motivated by their love for the country, not by political affiliations. I am proud of this generation,” Manjgaladze said.
