Road safety strategy to introduce special probationary period for novice drivers

Georgia’s National Road Safety Strategy for 2026–2030 has been published on the country’s Legislative Herald website.

According to the strategy, Georgia plans to introduce a special probationary period for novice drivers and impose stricter legal measures for traffic violations committed by newly licensed drivers.

“Given that novice drivers represent a high-risk group in terms of road safety in Georgia, the introduction of a special probationary period for them is planned,” the strategy states.

During the probationary period, differentiated and stricter legal response mechanisms are expected to be applied to traffic violations committed by novice drivers. These measures may include increased financial penalties and the deduction of a higher number of points from their driving licenses.

According to the strategy, the approach is intended to help correct the behavior of novice drivers, establish higher standards of responsibility and, ultimately, prevent road traffic accidents involving newly licensed drivers.

The National Road Safety Strategy covers the period from 2026 to 2030.
