Opposition Groups call on Syrian leader Al-Sharaa to revoke recognition of Abkhazia, Tskhinvali
Four opposition groups have called on Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa to revoke Russia’s recognition of Georgia’s occupied territories.
At a joint briefing, Nika Gvaramia, Badri Japaridze, and Tina Bokuchava announced the appeal.
“As you know, only Russia’s allied authoritarian regimes, such as Venezuela and Nicaragua, recognize Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia as independent states. In 2018, Bashar al-Assad also recognized these Russian-occupied regions of Georgia in response to Moscow’s support for his brutal regime.
The Syrian and Georgian peoples share a thousand-year history of cooperation and friendship. Our nations have the opportunity to develop truly fraternal and productive relations for mutual benefit. In this context, Syria’s de-recognition of Georgia’s regions would be a decisive step,” states the letter signed by Zurab Girchi Japaridze (Coalition for Change), Tinatin Bokuchava (Unity – National Movement), Irakli Kupradze (Strong Georgia), and Berdia Sichinava (Gakharia – For Georgia).
