New sanctions introduced for violations of GMO import and processing licensing rules
Sanctions will be introduced for violations of the new licensing regime for the import and processing of living genetically modified organisms (GMOs) intended for the production of animal feed.
The legislative package provides for fines as part of the changes, under which an exception to the existing ban will allow the import of living modified organisms into Georgia for processing for animal feed production purposes.
According to the amendments, violations of the conditions of a license for the import and processing of approved living genetically modified organisms in Georgia will result in a fine of 15,000 GEL. Carrying out such activities without the required license will carry a fine of 25,000 GEL. In both cases, confiscation of the subject of the offence may also be applied.
In addition, the draft law establishes stricter liability for repeated offences, with a fine of 50,000 GEL.
