MP Zviad Shalamberidze: Major powers want total control of EU governance to decide the fate of smaller nations

“Any mechanism introduced by EU member states to bypass the right of veto directly undermines the foundational principles of the European Council and European Commission—institutions built entirely on the principle of sovereign equality,” parliamentary majority MP Zviad Shalamberidze has warned.

According to the MP, major EU member states are attempting to seize full leverage over the bloc’s governance.

“I am convinced this will trigger fierce pushback within the European Council itself, among existing EU member states. This strikes directly at the foundational ethos of both the European Council and the European Commission—institutions anchored from the outset in the sovereign equality of all member states.

What we are seeing now is a clear attempt by larger nations to seize full control of the EU’s levers of power and make decisions over the heads of smaller countries, both current members and candidate states aspiring to join in future. It appears they want to dictate policy on critical issues such as EU enlargement, defence capability, sanctions regimes, and the exercise of veto power,” Shalamberidze said.

Shalamberidze was responding to media reports of leaked internal drafts indicating the EU is weighing up mechanisms to bypass individual member state vetoes on key strategic decisions.
