MP Samkharadze: EP’s new resolution proves once again that it does not recognise Georgian people’s right to choose their own government
“With its new resolution, the European Parliament has once again demonstrated its reckless determination to deny the Georgian people’s sovereign right to choose their own government independently,” stated the Chairman of the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee, MP Nikoloz Samkharadze.
According to him, this stance is not far removed from Russia’s refusal to recognise Georgia’s territorial integrity.
“This is a very grave violation of both the principles of international law and the country’s sovereignty. In essence, one could say it is not far removed from Russia’s stance of refusing to recognise Georgia’s territorial integrity. It is a deeply troubling decision. We have raised this issue with EU member states. Day by day, these decisions are becoming increasingly reckless. It begs the question: whose interests are the European Parliament and the individuals voting for this resolution actually serving? If, until now, four states alongside Russia undermined Georgia’s sovereignty, the European Parliament has now added itself to that list,” Nikoloz Samkharadze stated.
For context, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) also adopted a resolution regarding Georgia on June 24.
