MP Matikashvili: Tightening restrictions on foreign political interference is gaining global momentum

“Global momentum is gathering behind stricter rules designed to curb and restrict foreign political influence,” stated MP Davit Matikashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary Procedural Issues Committee, commenting on US legislation requiring individuals acting on behalf of foreign principals to register as foreign agents.

Matikashvili added that the campaign directed against Georgia, “dictated by both Eurocrats and the former US administration, was profoundly unjust.”

“The United States occupies a distinctive position here with the operation of FARA [Foreign Agents Registration Act]. We adopted its direct analogue in Georgia, a measure smeared entirely unfairly as a ‘Russian law’, despite being American in substance from start to finish.

We now see even stricter amendments to FARA being introduced in the US. This demonstrates that safeguarding national sovereignty against external threats is a pressing global concern. It underscores just how unjust the campaign waged against Georgia was, a campaign dictated by both Eurocrats and the former US administration. That entire campaign was built on falsehoods and constituted a series of deliberate steps taken against Georgia,” Matikashvili declared.
