MP Matikashvili: Prices for goods, fuel, and medicines are unreasonably high; markups can be lowered

According to the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues, MP Davit Matikashvili, a parliamentary commission on pricing is set to be established during the spring session.

He emphasised that the markup could be reduced, with active involvement from the business sector in investigating the matter.

Davit Matikashvili stated that prices for essential consumer goods, fuel, and medicines are unreasonably high.

“It is planned to form a temporary parliamentary commission during the spring session, which, in collaboration with the government’s commission and the separate processes carried out by the State Statistics Service, will scrutinise the realities of price formation.

The stakeholders involved in this issue will be surveyed. Prices for basic consumer goods, fuel, and medicines are excessively high. An 86% markup is extraordinary and defies logic. The current situation in European countries suggests that markups can indeed be reduced. It is encouraging that the business community is actively participating in this investigation and cooperating with the government.

Hopefully, we won’t have to wait until the end of April, and it would be preferable to establish common ground between businesses and relevant government bodies earlier. This would help ensure that prices are brought down to a reasonable level, easing the burden on society,” said Davit Matikashvili.
