MP Mariam Lashkhi: Trust in law enforcement led me to act against immoral behaviour

“There is a law, and accordingly, I turned to law enforcement officers, whom I trust, respect, and am grateful to, for that wrongful, immoral behaviour,” stated Georgian Dream MP Mariam Lashkhi.

She emphasised that everyone, regardless of age or gender, is accountable for violating the law.

“I do not categorise crimes; I am an independent citizen but with an even greater sense of responsibility. As a legislator, I must serve as a role model in protecting children, our country, and the fundamental principles and values we uphold. When I witnessed wrongful, immoral, and unlawful behaviour, I promptly appealed to law enforcement, to whom I have great trust and respect.

Law enforcement responded appropriately. Everyone is equal before the law and must bear responsibility for their actions, regardless of age or gender. Adults, in particular, must accept accountability for their crimes. This step was taken instinctively—by me, as a citizen, legislator, and mother,” Lashkhi stated.

The incident occurred on May 17, when activists approached Lashkhi at a cafe, shouting: “Freedom for the regime’s prisoners,” and “Down with the Russian regime.” At the time, Lashkhi was with her children. She filed a lawsuit against the activists, condemning their actions as a gross violation of multiple articles of the Children’s Rights Code. She further stated that the incident was not only an attack on a public official but also an assault on core societal values.

In connection with the insult to Mariam Lashkhi, Tatia Afriamashvili and Lika Lortkipanidze were sentenced to 12 days of administrative detention.
