MP Makhashvili: Some politicians may make shrill declarations, but when it comes to reality, no one can bypass Georgia and its geography

“There may be many alternatives and attempts in various directions, but when it comes to connecting West and East, Georgia has an irreplaceable role and position in this transport corridor,” the Chairman of Parliament’s European Integration Committee, MP Levan Makhashvili, has stated.

According to Makhashvili, acknowledgement of this from the European Commission is welcome.

Levan Makhashvili explained that Georgia is a constructive and reliable partner, and the country is doing everything for the development of this corridor.

“Not long ago, Kaja Kallas stated that she was reading various literature to become more intelligent. It seems she has also familiarised herself with the literature of the region and recognised Georgia’s strategic position and its vital role in connecting the West and East. It appears her understanding has been enlightened. Of course, this is an important and noteworthy document in many respects. First and foremost, to demonstrate that whilst many alternatives may exist and there may be attempts in various directions, when it comes to connecting West and East, Georgia has an irreplaceable role and position in this transport corridor. It is welcome that the European Commission has shown this recognition to the public.

This is a self-acknowledgement that, whilst some politicians may make shrill declarations, ultimately, when we are dealing with reality, no one can bypass Georgia and its geography. Georgia is a constructive and reliable partner for all those for whom the development of this transport corridor is important. Our country is doing everything for the development of the corridor, and we are ready, under conditions of constructive policy and approach, to fulfil this key role transparently, taking into account our obligations,” Levan Makhashvili noted.

For reference, a study published by the European Commission states: “Georgia is an irreplaceable strategic corridor whose modernisation and compatibility with European standards directly affects Europe’s economic security and stability.”
