MP Makhashvili: It feels like attempt to silence our arguments in Brussels to block progress, reset

According to MP Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the European Integration Committee of the Georgian Parliament, the reasons cited for postponing the Georgia-EU Human Rights Dialogue are superficial and appear to be mere pretexts to shelve the meeting.

Makhashvili explained that Georgia has been preparing for this meeting for approximately six months.

“We have the feeling that there was an attempt to dodge this meeting, despite the agreed agenda, and to disregard our arguments in Brussels. The primary objective was not to set a positive example or to take a meaningful step forward, which might have led to a reset in relations. It seems certain individuals in Brussels were not pleased with this and chose to escalate tensions rather than return to a dialogue regime.

We have no other explanation. The reasons presented, whether officially or unofficially, are not convincing; to us, they appear more like excuses than genuine concerns,” MP Makhashvili told GPB First Channel.

Yesterday, on November 19, the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement regarding the postponement of the Georgia-EU Human Rights Dialogue meeting. The ministry noted that the EU side postponed the meeting scheduled for November 21, 2025, in Brussels several days earlier. They further stated that this hold on issues related to human rights demonstrates Brussels’s reluctance to listen to Georgia’s perspectives.
