MP Levan Machavariani: EU will have to face reality; by 2030, Georgia will be the most prepared candidate country for accession

“Unfair treatment towards our country continues, and nothing speaks to this more clearly than when Georgia is omitted from discussions regarding the Middle Corridor,” stated MP Levan Machavariani, a member of the parliamentary majority.

According to Machavariani, when Black Sea littoral states are invited to ministerial meetings, Georgia is not invited, “as if it does not border the Black Sea.”

“Sooner or later, they will have to face reality. As for enlargement and taking on new members, the EU official position is that this will not happen before 2030. We can say with certainty that by 2030, Georgia will be the most prepared candidate country for accession,” declared Levan Machavariani.

Asked who bears responsibility for the stalled European integration process, the parliamentary majority MP stated: “This is the result of the reckless policies of Eurocrats.”

“We, Georgian Dream, are not the only ones in a situation where we currently lack relations with the Brussels bureaucracy. Their relations with America are no less damaged than those with Georgia. I do not believe Georgia and the US together could have done anything so wrong that relations with Brussels today are virtually non-existent. We hope the governing class will reconsider its reckless policies and that relations will settle—both between Brussels and us, and between Brussels and the United States. For the population of the EU, just as for the citizens of Georgia, the security umbrella offered to the EU by NATO, with the United States as its main guarantor, is hugely important,” stated Levan Machavariani.

The report comes as Politico, citing senior EU officials, published information indicating that the European Union is preparing proposals under which the four countries closest to joining the bloc—Montenegro, Ukraine, Moldova, and Albania—will receive a clear, phased plan for EU accession.
