MP Giorgi Gabunia: Whether opposition unites or not, political processes will remain unchanged without public support
“Take a look at the opposition’s political space. They are radical groups operating under a single goal, with external mandates and funding,” MP Giorgi Gabunia, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Culture, said.
According to Gabunia, the opposition does not enjoy popular support.
“I’ve been in Parliament for a year, and not a single month passes without me being asked whether the opposition is uniting and becoming a serious force. I have not seen this happen, nor can I witness it. We are here, and we will see if they truly unite. But why should we be worried or afraid? Last year, two elections were held in which the Georgian Dream gained unprecedented levels of support. The opposition, on the other hand, has not garnered the public’s backing. The mood of the populace is quite clear. Any unification is centred around an idea. But what idea are they uniting around?
Take a look at the opposition’s political landscape. They may appear divided, sometimes engaging with one another, sometimes not, but they are radical groups operating under one overarching goal, with external directives and funding. They often issue statements alongside ambassadors from various countries. Their political scope is limited to this.
Therefore, whether they unite or not, the political processes in Georgia will not fundamentally change, because they lack the support of the people,” Gabunia concluded.
