Ministry of Justice requests the Committee of Ministers of CoE to discuss the “Case of Deportees”
The Ministry of Justice of Georgia requested the Committee of Ministers of Council of Europe to discuss the “Case of Deportees” within the enhanced supervision procedure.
The Ministry of Justice has released the regarding the statement.
As noted in the statement, in January 31, the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights announced the Judgment concerning Georgian citizens’ deportation from Russia. Based on the decision, Russia has to pay Georgia 10,000,000 euros (EUR) in respect of non-pecuniary damage suffered by a group of at least 1,500 Georgian nationals.
That amount is to be distributed to the individual victims of 2006 mass deportation from Russia. The Russian Federation was given a 3-month term to pay moral compensation to the Georgian state.
Taking into consideration the fact that Russia has not yet paid the compensation (until May 1, 2019), the Ministry of Justice of Georgia requested the Committee of Ministers of Council of Europe to review the “Case of Deportees” within the enhanced supervision procedure and hold the debates. In addition, the Committee of Ministers was requested to obtain an official explanation from Russia in the shortest possible time.
“Within the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice will take all the measures to force Russian Federation to comply with the obligations imposed by the Strasbourg Court”, – the statement released by the Ministry of Justice reads.
