Minister of Economy: Government aims to eliminate electricity imports by 2036
“The government’s goal is to increase the country’s installed capacity to 11,500 megawatts by 2036 and make the electricity sector completely self-sufficient. This is the guarantee of our country’s independence and security, which means Georgia’s elimination of imports and fully meeting domestic needs with electricity generated in the country,” said Mariam Kvrivishvili, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, during the meeting with energy sector representatives.
The Minister presented a 10-year plan for energy sector development. She focused on large hydro-electric power plants, ongoing reforms, the government’s decisions to boost investments in the sector and writing off fines to acting companies.
“By the end of this month, the process related to writing off fines will be completed, and we will know which energy projects remain and continue to operate within the framework of the updated memorandums,” she said.
Mariam Kvrivishvili underscored the significance of a dialogue and efficient communication between the Ministry and the private sector.
“It is key and valuable to hold open dialogue with the private sector and agree on new initiatives. This is the precondition for the sector’s correct and healthy development. We are motivated to propose the decisions to contribute to the rapid development of significant projects, which will ensure our country’s energy security and independence,” she stated.
