MIA General Inspectorate detains security police officer on charges of abuse of official power
Employees of the General Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia (MIA) have detained an individual, identified as E.K., born in 1997, on charges of abuse of official power, following a court ruling.
According to the Interior Ministry, the investigation revealed that an officer of the Security Police Department, abusing his official authority, unlawfully protected the business interests of his wife’s parents along Batumi Boulevard.
“Following the investigative measures undertaken by the General Inspectorate, E.K. was detained as a suspect. The investigation is ongoing under Article 332 of the Criminal Code, which stipulates a maximum sentence of three years’ imprisonment.
We would also like to remind the public that, as part of the ongoing inquiry into this criminal case, another officer from the Security Police Department was previously detained on January 31. A.M., born in 2002, was arrested on suspicion of accepting a bribe from a citizen in exchange for favours towards street vendors. The investigation into A.M.’s actions is proceeding under Article 338 of the Criminal Code, which carries a penalty of up to nine years’ imprisonment,” the MIA stated.
