MIA: 240 out of 314 test positive for drug use in Georgia over past week

In line with tightened anti-drug legislation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reports that 314 individuals were tested for drug use across Tbilisi and other regions over the past week. Of these, 240 tested positive, and their cases have been forwarded to the court.

According to the ministry, 23 individuals refused to undergo drug testing. They will be fined under the law, which treats refusal in the same manner as confirmed drug use.

The ministry emphasised that all actions taken by law enforcement, including drug testing, are part of broader efforts to combat the spread of narcotics and are conducted in the public interest.

“A disinformation campaign has been circulating, falsely claiming that only protesters or members of a particular political party are being targeted. Police officers do not identify or exclude individuals based on political beliefs. These claims aim to mislead the public and are entirely unfounded,” the ministry stated.

The MIA urged all parties to refrain from spreading misinformation and called on the media to act responsibly in the fight against drug use. “Accurate information plays a crucial role in this process. We call on the media not to hinder our efforts but to join us in sharing responsibility.”
