MFA: Rhetoric of EU representatives on Georgia’s internal processes hinders objective assessment of these developments, impedes constructive cooperation
“The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern over the recent statement of the EU representatives on the ongoing legal proceedings in the Constitutional Court of Georgia,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said.
According to the statement, the Ministry believes that casting doubt on the legitimacy of the legal proceedings and pre-judging the judicial process, before the court examines the case, constitutes an attempt to exert undue pressure on a constitutional institution and an interference in Georgia’s internal affairs. In contrast, respect for the rule of law requires that the court be allowed to examine the case independently, in accordance with the Constitution of Georgia and applicable legislation.
“The ministry expresses concern that the rhetoric of European Union representatives regarding Georgia’s internal processes hinders an objective assessment of these developments and impedes constructive cooperation.
The Ministry calls on all representatives to refrain from making similar statements and actions, providing preliminary assessments on court processes that may be perceived as interference in the activities of independent constitutional institutions, and urges them to respect the rule of law, court independence and mutual respect principles,” reads the statement.
