MEP Marina Kaljurand: Europe not to offer its mediation endlessly

Ambassador Danielsson (special envoy of the European Council President on Georgian political crisis) cannot decide the future of Georgia and make political decisions on behalf of Georgian political leaders. This should be done by Georgians, said MEP Marina Kaljurand, Chair of the Delegation for Relations with the South Caucasus.

“Europe will not be endlessly offering its high-level visits, its mediation,” MEP Marina Kaljurand stated during an online conference hosted by the Georgian Institute of Politics on April 7.

The MEP underlined that obligations go to all sides. Kaljurand said she expected a bit more from the governing party than others, but it does not mean that the opposition should not show respect and commitment to what the ruling party is doing. “This should be really a balanced process,” she claimed.

According to the MEP, it should be explained to the Georgian political leadership that the Georgian political crisis is not the question of an internal affair, it is much wider. “It is the future of EU-Georgian relations, it is the future of Georgian high aspirations for Trans-Atlantic cooperation, future of the Georgian nation,” she said.

MEP Marina Kaljurand echoed the reactions by some of the ruling Georgian Dream party representatives, who said that the April 1 statement by the leading MEPs on EU-Georgia relations reflected only the views of “six or seven” European lawmakers.

“In the statement, we criticized all political leaders of Georgia involved in the mediation process. Because the mediation can’t be done by the EU, compromise can’t be agreed upon by the EU. Ambassador Danielsson can’t decide the future of Georgia and make political decisions on behalf of Georgian political leaders. This should be done by Georgians,” Marina Kaljurand claimed.

The second EU-mediated attempt to solve political crises in Georgia failed. EU mediator Christian Danielsson said he proposed a solution that puts the country’s interest first to the parties, but none of the political actors agreed on the solution.
