The Georgian national basketball team faced Ukraine in their World Cup qualification match, suffering a disappointing 75–92 defeat.

Much has already been written about the significance of this fixture, but one crucial point bears repeating: the World Cup qualifiers are split into two stages. Three out of the four teams in the current group (Spain, Ukraine, and Georgia) advance to the second stage. From there, six-team groups will be formed, with only the top three punching their ticket to the tournament. Crucially, teams carry their points forward into the second stage, which is precisely why every single victory is worth its weight in gold.

With this victory, Ukraine have taken a massive step towards World Cup qualification, while the Georgian squad now need to secure the maximum possible points from their remaining seven matches to achieve their goal.

How did Ukraine unravel Georgia? Exceptionally well-drilled for the clash, the opponents delivered a formidable defensive display. They consistently denied Georgia easy access to the paint, forcing them to work hard for every single point at the free-throw line. Georgia, meanwhile, rarely threatened from the perimeter and struggled heavily with shooting accuracy.

Ukraine’s tactical preparation extended beyond pure basketball. Knowing full well that Georgia’s entire system was anchored around Marcquise Reed, their coach, Ainars Bagatskis, clearly instructed his players to rattle the American playmaker. Early in the second quarter, the plan worked to perfection. Through a series of unsportsmanlike provocations, Oleksandr Kobzystyi managed to get himself ejected, but crucially drew Marcquise Reed into a disqualification along with him. Stripped of their talisman, the Georgian team collapsed and could not turn the tide, slumping to their third defeat in the group.

To make matters worse, with four minutes left on the clock, Georgia suffered another crushing blow when officials disqualified Goga Bitadze, forcing him off the court ahead of time.

Before his early exit in just 11 minutes of play, Marcquise Reed had racked up 18 points. Tornike Shengelia contributed 13 points, while Bitadze recorded 8 points and 10 rebounds. Andronikashvili chipped in with 8 points, and both Burjanadze and Sanadze finished with 7 points apiece.

The Georgian national team will play their final match of the first group stage on July 5 in Tbilisi against Spain. The game tips off at 19:30, with live coverage broadcast directly on GPB First Channel.
