Mayor Kaladze emphasizes communication for future hydropower development
Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze stated that the implementation of large energy projects, including the Namakhvan Hydropower Plant, is crucial for strengthening Georgia’s energy independence.
Responding to a media question, Kaladze emphasized that Georgia has sufficient natural resources to avoid dependence on external electricity supplies and could even become a net exporter.
“It is very important for our country to continue implementing hydroelectric power projects so that Georgia becomes energy independent. The country has vast resources that must be used rationally. Otherwise, not using them would be a mistake,” he said.
Kaladze noted that during his tenure as Energy Minister, multiple renewable energy projects were carried out despite opposition, including wind and hydropower plants.
“We have the opportunity not to depend on either Azerbaijan or Russia in terms of electricity. On the contrary, we can become self-sufficient and even export electricity to European countries,” he added.
The mayor also highlighted the importance of other large-scale projects, including Khudoni Hydropower Plant, stressing that such initiatives are essential for the country’s long-term energy security.
At the same time, Kaladze acknowledged shortcomings in public communication regarding the Namakhvan project.
“There should have been more effective communication with the public. It was necessary to better explain the importance of such projects. In large-scale initiatives, some level of public opposition is natural, and it is our responsibility to engage more actively and provide clear information,” he said.
He added that while various factors contributed to the project’s suspension, its future implementation remains important for Georgia’s energy independence.
