Lelo member says UNM, GD impede Georgia's European future

Salome Samadashvili, a Lelo party MP, accused both the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party and the opposition United National Movement (UNM) of impeding Georgia’s European future.

During the first spring session of parliament on Tuesday, Samadashvili stressed that the April 19 agreement brokered by European Council President Charles Michel paved the way for de-polarisation. She went on to say that the United National Movement (UNM) party refused to sign the deal while the GD just “trashed it.”

“UNM and GD, you are two political forces now acting together to thwart our country’s European future. The irony is that the current deteriorated health and status of the UNM founder, Mikheil Saakashvili, looks to be a huge obstacle to this country ensuring its European integration,” Salome Samadashvili claimed.

The MP further said that the governing party is sending misleading signals about the execution of the 12-point recommendations.

“Nobody, including the European Union, has released a report on how the 12 points have been met. A report like this does not exist in nature since no one has written it. The 12 priorities pertain to our country’s democracy and the supremacy of law rather than the report, which addresses the compatibility of our legislation with the EU’s acquis. In this regard, we have made progress. Nobody, however, will base their judgement on this perspective when granting us EU candidate status,” Samadashvili stated.
