Irakli Chilingarashvili has been appointed as a liaison prosecutor at Eurojust, the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has announced.
According to the agency, he has many years of experience within the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia, including serving as Head of the International Relations and Legal Support Department.
As an expert in international legal cooperation, he has participated in numerous international projects and represented Georgia in the Council of Europe Committee of Experts, which works on the functioning of European conventions on cooperation in criminal matters.
Chilingarashvili held introductory meetings in The Hague, Kingdom of the Netherlands, with Eurojust President Michael Schmid, Administrative Director Vincent Jamin, heads of various structural units, and prosecutors from EU member states. During the meetings, the Georgian side noted that the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia views Eurojust as an important platform for strengthening international cooperation in criminal matters with EU member states. He also expressed readiness to further enhance effective cooperation between Georgia and Eurojust member states in combating transnational organized crime.
The cooperation agreement between Georgia and Eurojust was signed in The Hague in March 2019. Georgia is the first country in the South Caucasus region to sign such an agreement with Eurojust. Partner states, including the United States, Norway, and Switzerland, also maintain cooperation with the organization.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, cooperation with Eurojust supports Georgia’s efforts in combating transnational and organized crime. Eurojust, based in The Hague, is the European Union’s agency for judicial cooperation in criminal matters, established in 2002.
