Georgia’s Ministry of Education, Science and Youth decided to postpone the implementation of certain requirements for the teachers’ wage system until the 2027–2028 academic year.

According to the statement released by the Ministry, to receive the increased hourly work-corresponding monetary remuneration starting from the 2026–2027 academic year, a teacher was required to possess confirmed competence in the discipline or educational level they taught. The purpose of this requirement was to ensure alignment between the teacher’s qualifications and their subject-specific teaching occupancy.

“Based on a new decision, to support teachers and ensure the continuity of the teaching process in schools, acting teachers will be given a reasonable additional timeframe to confirm their subject-matter competence; they will be required to pass the subject examination before the start of the 2027–2028 academic year.

In the transition period, the Ministry will give teachers the opportunity to take the competence confirmation examination twice, in both summer and winter. They will undergo special courses of the National Center for Teacher Professional Development (TPDC) for free.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Youth prioritizes the consistent improvement of the quality of the teaching and learning process, as well as support for the professional stability, dignified working conditions, and professional development of every teacher.

The decision aims to achieve the following goals: Teachers will be given additional time to confirm their competence, while schools will be allowed to meet new requirements prepared so that the learning process is not interrupted in the transition period,” reads the statement.
