Hungarian PM calls EU's refusal to grant Georgia candidate status discriminatory

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called the European Council’s decision to deny Georgia EU candidate status unfair and disrespectful to the Georgian people.

During a joint news conference with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Orbán termed the decision “harmful.”

“We are all aware that a bad decision was taken in Brussels. It was discriminatory to provide candidate status to Moldova and Ukraine but not Georgia. This is a bad move that cannot be defended morally. Our guest and his country deserve to be candidates since he has worked so hard over the last years. This decision was insulting to the Georgian people and the Georgian state,” said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

According to Viktor Orbán, Hungary would continue to assist Georgia in achieving candidate status and joining the EU as soon as possible.

“16 Hungarians are working on Georgian affairs inside the European Union, and we are doing everything we can to start discussions as soon as possible,” he added.
