House of Representatives of US Congress approves Foreign Operations Budget Bill

The House of Representatives of US Congress has approved Foreign Operations Budget Bill which also refers to Georgia.

The document says that the United States will provide at least $ 132,025,000 in assistance to Georgia, but that the country reserves the right to freeze 15% of Georgia’s funding if Secretary of State Mike Pompeo finds out that there is no democratization process in the country.

Also, according to the document, Georgia will not receive 15% of the provided financial assistance if anti-corruption legislation is not approved and supremacy of law is not established for private sector that includes protection of rights of foreign businesspersons and their financial and investment interests.

The document states that the governments, which will recognize independence of Georgian occupied regions by Russia – Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions – will not be able to use the budget.  Use of financial assistance for Georgian occupied regions is also prohibited.

The Treasury Secretariat should call on Executive Directors of international financial institutions not to support any institution which will violate Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
