Health Committee Chair: Drug substitution program to be transferred to state, offered free of charge

Zaza Lominadze, Chairman of the Parliamentary Health Committee, states that Parliament has approved a significant draft law aimed at tightening Georgia’s drug policy.

Lominadze told the GPB First Channel that the drug substitution program will now be fully free for individuals with drug addiction, and the state will take over the importation of psychotropic substances.

“There were over 40 drug substitution centers in Georgia, where addicts received various medications. The key change is that these services will be transferred from private to state-run facilities, with full government oversight. Importantly, the program will now be free for those who previously had to pay. Everyone in need of medication will receive treatment,” Lominadze said.

He added that by assuming responsibility for importing psychotropic substances, the state will eliminate private and financial interests.

“The government will have full control over import, distribution, and treatment, while sales through pharmacies will continue as before,” he noted.
