GWP enters final stage of water network overhaul on Rustaveli Avenue
Georgian Water and Power (GWP) is finalising a major overhaul of water and wastewater networks along Rustaveli Avenue, part of a broader rehabilitation of Tbilisi’s central thoroughfare.
According to Georgian Water and Power, the rehabilitation project will see more than 5 km of water supply and sewerage networks put into operation. Engineers have already completed the installation of 71 control and isolation valves, alongside nine new fire hydrants.
The large-scale upgrade on Tbilisi’s central Rustaveli Avenue is being delivered in line with strict performance frameworks set by the international operator Aqualia, ensuring long-term efficiency and operational resilience across the upgraded network.
Giorgi Veshapidze, Director of Technical and Operational Services at GWP, noted that the structural footprint and layout of historic buildings along Rustaveli Avenue required contractors to lay the mains at significant depths.
“The wastewater network was laid at a depth of six metres, with drinking water mains installed two metres down,” Veshapidze explained. “As part of the overhaul, ageing cast-iron pipes were replaced with modern steel piping featuring dual internal and external insulation, while the sewage network was upgraded with reinforced concrete piping. Despite complex engineering challenges on site, works have been completed to high standards and well ahead of schedule.”
GWP invested GEL 12.5 million in the Rustaveli Avenue utility upgrade.
Giga Nadiradze, GWP’s Technical and Operational Director, confirmed that the utility company has completely replaced obsolete, deteriorated pipework along the avenue.
“The replacement pipelines and engineering materials comply fully with modern international standards and technologies, guaranteeing long-term system reliability,” Nadiradze stated. “The vast majority of works are complete, and the project will be fully wrapped up in the coming days, after which the new network will be formally commissioned.”
