Government nominates Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for highest state honour after historic Champions League victory

The Georgian government has announced the nomination of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for the prestigious Order of Victory of Saint George, following his historic triumph in the UEFA Champions League.

During today’s government session, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze expressed his pride and congratulations to Kvaratskhelia, emphasizing the national significance of his achievement.

“I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on winning the Champions League—football’s highest honour. This victory is a matter of immense pride for our entire country and is perceived by every Georgian fan as a shared triumph. We must not only celebrate his success but also thank him for bringing glory to Georgia. I am confident this is just the beginning of many more milestones he will reach in his career. Wishing him continued success,” the Prime Minister has said.

Highlighting the tradition of honouring outstanding athletes, Kobakhidze underscored that such achievements merit the highest state awards.

“Last year, Kvaratskhelia received the Order of Honour for his contributions to the national team. His recent Champions League victory clearly merits the highest honour of the Order of Victory of Saint George. After consultations with the President and the Speaker of Parliament, we unanimously agreed that he deserves this highest national honour. The President will bestow the award upon him,” Kobakhidze went on to say.

Kvaratskhelia, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, made history as the first Georgian footballer to score in a Champions League final, helping his team secure a commanding 5-0 victory over Inter Milan.

In addition to Kvaratskhelia, the government also nominated renowned athletes Kakha Kaladze and Zaza Pachulia for the same esteemed award.

“Kakha Kaladze, who has won the Champions League twice with AC Milan, and Zaza Pachulia, who has triumphed three times in the NBA—twice as a player and once as a manager—have yet to be recognized with such honours. Their achievements are monumental, and we believe it is fitting to acknowledge their contributions to Georgian sports history. Thanks to the joint decision of the President and Parliament, we are nominating Kakha Kaladze and Zaza Pachulia for the Order of Victory of Saint George as well,” Prime Minister Kobakhidze explained.
