GOC Head of PR Service: Theological seminary remains education requirement for patriarchal candidate, age to be finalized at Holy Synod meeting
Education-related issues of a patriarchal candidate were not reviewed at today’s Holy Synod meeting, said Andria Jaghmaidze, Head of Public Relations Service of the Georgian Orthodox Church (GOC).
“At least a theological seminary remains an educational requirement for a patriarchal candidate. The decision about the age of the eligible candidate was not made today. As for the interpretation of the passage, no older than 70 years, the issue will be discussed at the next meeting of the Holy Synod, where three candidates will be selected,” he said.
Jaghmaidze further clarified that today’s sitting discussed many issues, while concrete decisions would be made at the next meeting.
In addition, Andria Jaghmaidze responded to a question if a patriarchal candidate who had not turned 71 could run for office.
“We are discussing this issue and the finalized opinion will be released later,” he said, adding that other issues related to the election of the Patriarch would be specified in the Synod’s resolution.
