Girchi's Sabo: Ambassador Dunnigan ideologically aligned with Democrats; no surprise in her retirement

“Robin Dunnigan was more ideologically aligned with the Democrats, and I see nothing particularly extraordinary about replacing the ambassador following the inauguration of a new administration,” stated Herman Sabo, a member of the Girchi party.

According to him, the incoming U.S. administration leans more Republican and may wish to appoint someone who better aligns with their priorities in the region.

“Of course, it’s possible that someone genuinely leaves politics to focus on their family. Leaving politics is one thing; moving on to another position is another. In this case, Ambassador Dunnigan explicitly stated she was leaving altogether, which makes her departure more understandable. However, it shouldn’t be ruled out that Ambassador Dunnigan was ideologically closer to the Democrats, and I don’t see anything particularly extraordinary in replacing the ambassador because a new administration has taken office; this is a common practice.

The new U.S. administration, being more Republican, might prefer to appoint someone who aligns more closely with their strategic priorities in the region, or perhaps they simply want a different approach. We cannot exclude that possibility either,” Sabo added.

The U.S. Ambassador to Georgia, Robin Dunnigan, has recently retired. The U.S. Embassy issued a statement regarding her departure. Dunnigan explained, “I made a personal decision to retire; my government did not request my recall.”
