Georgia’s Defence Minister holds strategic defence talks with Azerbaijani counterpart in Shusha

Georgia’s Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Irakli Chikovani, met with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Colonel General Zakir Hasanov, during the 13th Azerbaijan–Turkey–Georgia Trilateral Defence Ministerial in Shusha.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Defence, the two ministers discussed pressing regional security challenges. The parties reaffirmed Georgia’s readiness to support sustainable peace and stability across the South Caucasus. The discussions underscored the strategic role both nations play within the wider regional and global context.

In their bilateral talks, Minister Chikovani and Colonel General Hasanov reviewed implementation details for the joint defence cooperation plan. Key agenda items included military education, professional development exchanges, and regular joint training exercises involving Georgian and Azerbaijani personnel.

The two delegations also highlighted the importance of trilateral operational exercises and expert-level consultations conducted under the established Azerbaijan–Turkey–Georgia security framework.

During the summit in Azerbaijan, Chikovani also met with Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler, followed by a plenary session with all three defence chiefs. Georgia is scheduled to host the trilateral defence ministerial next year.
