Georgian Penitentiary Service explains circumstances of detainee death

Georgia’s Special Penitentiary Service clarified the circumstances surrounding a detainee’s death after being taken to a hospital.

According to Malkhaz Urtkmelidze, chief of the Special Penitentiary Service’s Medical Department, the inmate was discovered unconscious on the floor of his cell on January 23 after exhibiting symptoms of high blood pressure and was later brought to a civilian hospital.

Urtkmelidze indicated that the conclusion and cause of death would be decided once the medical examination and inquiry are completed. “Therefore, I ask everyone to refrain from preliminary conclusions.”

“There were no visible injuries during the external examination.” Urtkmelidze stated that there was suspicion of an acute cerebral circulation disturbance, thus he was sent to a civilian clinic with a preliminary stroke diagnosis.

He noticed that a slight cut in the brow area was documented upon admission to the hospital, which the emergency team stated occurred during transportation when “the patient stood up and hit his head on an iron table next to the stretcher.”

“High-tech examinations at the clinic, particularly computed tomography, revealed damage to the skull vault and base bones.” “These injuries were not visible from the outside,” Urtkmelidze stated.

He stated that bleeding in the brain tissue “raises serious doubts about the stroke.”
