Georgian opposition announces rallies

The opposition announced peaceful rallies in the Georgian capital Tbilisi and Batumi in Adjara on February 25 and March 31.

The United National Movement (UNM) Chair Nika Melia said they would march in protest against the Soviet occupation on February 25. This date marks 100 years since Soviet Russia’s Red Army took over Tbilisi.

“Also, citizens will gather on Independence Referendum Day on March 31 when Georgia gained back its sovereignty on this day in 1991,” he said.

The opposition European Georgia leader Giga Bokeria believes February 25 is a symbolic day as 100 years ago, Georgia faced the biggest tragedy when it lost its freedom.

Bokeria noted that today “Ivanishvili’s regime and infamous milieu threaten Georgia’s sovereignty and democracy.”

Opposition Labour party leader Shalva Natelashvili added that all Georgian citizens would join the protest. “Spring will become a historical stage for new elections,” he stressed.
