Georgian, European Council Presidents discuss 12 proposals, reform implementation

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili and European Council President Charles Michel discussed Georgia’s European future, 12 recommendations, and reform-related issues.

President Michel, according to the presidential administration, positively regarded the role of the Georgian President in the process of Georgia’s European path and resolving party divisions.

Georgia’s President invited Charles Michel to visit the country, who accepted the invitation. The European Council President stated his willingness to visit Georgia soon.

President Michel recalled the historic decision of the European Council in June 2022 to give Georgia a European Perspective, emphasizing his unwavering view that Georgia’s future lies in the European Union.

The Georgian President emphasized the importance of granting the country the EU membership candidate status. The President reiterated the Georgian people’s unwavering commitment to joining the European Union.

President Michel stated that the Commission would prepare a report on the 12 recommendations of the European Commission as part of the “enlargement package” in the fall, after which President Michel plans to put the issue of the next steps on the European Council agenda in the fourth quarter of 2023.

President Michel emphasized the need for more progress in fields such as justice reform, media freedom, civil society, de-oligarchization, and depolarization.

“European values run through the veins of the Georgian people. I reaffirmed the EU’s rock solid support for our shared European future to President Salome Zourabichvili. Concrete progress on key priorities is crucial on your path towards our EU family,” President Michel tweeted following the meeting.
