At the invitation of the Secretary-General of a global intergovernmental coalition Community of Democracies (CoD) and with the support of 28 member states of the Coalition’s Governing Council, Georgia became chair of the Community of Democracies Working Group on Democracy and Technology. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia releases this information.
According to the state agency, the Working Group on Democracy and Technology is a platform for the development of cooperation, which aims to use digital technology to support effective and accountable democratic governance.
“One of the goals of the working group is supporting democracy and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals’ implementation through the development of digital technology.
The chairmanship of the Working Group gives Georgia an opportunity to present itself as a country implementing successful democratic reforms; Share the experience gained in this field with other states; Also, take into account the results achieved by other countries and achieve progress and make a tangible contribution to strengthening Community of Democracies and finding global solutions to common challenges. At the same time, it is an opportunity for Georgia, along with other states and partner countries, to contribute to the overall effort towards openness and democracy” – statement released by Ministry reads.
The Governing Council currently joins 29 member states – Argentina, USA, Guatemala, UK, El Salvador, Estonia, India, Italy, Japan, Canada, Republic of Korea, Costa Rica, Lithuania, Mali, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, Norway, Nigeria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Georgia, Hungary, Uruguay, Finland, Sweden, Chile and northern Macedonia.
Georgia joined the CoD Governing Council of Community in October 2019.
