GD Chair sees EU Ambassador's surveillance remarks as 'slightly off' diplomatic standards

“I’m not a diplomat and may not entirely understand these issues, but I think Carl Hartzell’s statement slightly deviated from diplomatic standards, especially during this pre-election period,” Irakli Kobakhidze stated. The Chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party commented on the remarks on surveillance made by EU Ambassador to Georgia earlier today.

At the same time, Irakli Kobakhidze said the fact that the friends of Georgia are interested in such facts is indeed natural.

“It is natural that our friends are interested in such facts. If there are even signs that someone is surveilling someone illegally, of course, our friends would have got interested, and so they did. Everything should be made clear, who leaked what, what was authentic, how true this information is and so on. You know the general assessments of this fact from us. As for the Ambassador’s statement, I am not a diplomat and may not entirely understand these issues, but I think the diplomatic standards were slightly missed, especially during this pre-election period,” Kobakhidze said.

EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell informed that the Georgian Envoy to Brussels was called up to EU Headquarters on Tuesday over alleged leaked security files and demanded the allegations be “followed up appropriately”.

Alleged security files leaked on the Internet last week. Although largely incriminating clergy, as Georgian media reported, some of these files indicated spying on foreign diplomats.
