Europe's future main theme in Budapest, says MP Samkharadze

“The future of Europe is the central theme of the conference currently underway in Budapest. The speeches will focus on the visions that each country has regarding the EU’s future,” according to Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament.

He noted that delegations from all EU member states, as well as candidate countries, are present in Budapest.

“In our address, the main emphasis will be on issues related to Georgia’s EU membership, including the problems that exist in this direction, and also on our vision regarding the future of the EU and Georgia’s future membership,” Samkharadze explained.

The Georgian delegation plans to highlight what they perceive as “unfair treatment” toward Georgia, claiming the EU “did not take into account Georgia’s security challenges” and that the EU’s approach to imposing sanctions against Russia “was not particularly friendly” toward Georgia.

Samkharadze added they will also discuss “how important it was for Georgia to implement reforms that will bring Georgia closer to the EU.”

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili is currently visiting Budapest, where he is participating in the Conference of Parliamentary Speakers from EU member and partner countries. Papuashvili is scheduled to deliver speeches at both sessions of the event and will also hold bilateral meetings during his visit.
